Lisa Eldridge: Brand Review

Lisa Eldridge is an acclaimed make-up artist with an impressive list of celebrity clients, a global creative director position at LancĂ´me and a New York Times bestselling author. I am incredibly drawn to her energy is incredibly positive and she is such an enthusiastic lover of all things beauty. She is an especially unique force as she posts genuine YouTube content that focuses on teaching skill and technique rather than pushing product or advertising her own line of products. I have learned an incredible amount of make-up technique from her and find her content to be refreshing and relaxing. I would describe her style as natural, dewy, and giving the appearance of that coveted ‘model off-duty/effortless’ chic.

In November 2018, Lisa launched her own line of lipsticks. Initially, she released a collection of varying tones of reds. As time passed, she has expanded her shades to include neutrals, pinks, and further expanded upon her reds. This is undoubtedly a luxury line. A single lipstick costs $36 (US dollars). This places her in the price range of brands like YSL ($38,), Charlotte Tilbury ($37), Dior ($38), Pat McGrath ($38), and Bobbi Brown ($38).
Compared to her fellow luxury line companions, I find her quality to be exceptional for the price. I far prefer the pigment and lasting power of her lipsticks to those of Charlotte Tilbury, Pat McGrath and even YSL.

Critiques:

  • The consistent gold packaging makes it difficult to identify which shade is which without removing the cap to visualize the shade. I have opted to store my lipsticks upside down so I may see the names listed without having to open multiple lipsticks to find a certain shade.
  • Strongly magnetized caps repel the lipsticks from one another. Depending on how you prefer to store your lipsticks, this could be an issue as the magnets will push away from one another if you are trying to store them on a shelf or some other free-form option.

Praise:

  • User Experience. The gold packaging is weighted, sturdy and chicly minimalistic. The lipstick cap is embellished with Lisa’s signature cursive ‘L’ with lips and a beauty mark. The lipstick bullet has a velvetized texture which is eye-catching and intriguing. Completely scent-free which is refreshing when compared to many luxury lines that use heavy perfumes in their products.
  • Ethics: Cruelty Free. 100% Recyclable shipping packaging.
  • Shade range: 13 total shades (many of which are currently sold out) that feel extensive yet well-curated and will suit skin tones ranging from rich to fair. Lisa also uses inclusive models on her site to showcase a variety of skin tones in her shades.
  • Arrival Time: Shipping is free and quick. I immediately received tracking information and was thrilled to see my items arrive within 3 business days. Products were well packaged (again, with sustainable, recyclable packaging). My package also included velvetized lipstick kiss stickers (such a fun touch).
  • Performance: Easy to apply, smooth and semi-matte as opposed to a drying totally flat matte. Long lasting and leave a beautiful stain to the lip as they fade through the day. These feel special and aren’t as typical as other types of luxury lipstick brands are. For example, if I were to try to the product blindfolded, I believe I would identify it as high end. I can’t say the same for other formulas.

Overall, I am a loyal customer and fan of Lisa and her line. She has taken a curated approach to releasing products which seems to be driven by her attention to detail and quality. Her products feel like anything but a cash-grab. Meticulous formulation and craftsmanship have led to high demand–if you want to try her products you have to act quickly.

My most beloved shades (if you could only choose three) are:

  1. Velvet Ribbon (vibrant, classic neutral/blue red). This is the red to end all reds. Perfectly balanced.
  2. Velvet Fawn (delicate beige cafe). The quintessential perfect work-day neutral.
  3. Velvet Decade (decadent burn chocolate) This richly deep tone is vampy yet wearable and could even be a beautiful neutral on richer skin tones.
